The Single Best Plant to Purify Your Indoor Air

When it comes to indoor air quality, you can never do too much. In the winter months, our indoor air is on average five times more polluted than the outdoors. With the temperature so low for months at a time, opening the window is simply not an option. So, Four Seasons recommends the APCO UV-C Germicidal Light for 99% cleaner air in 24 hours.

Still, there is more you can do to breathe easy. For a natural approach, there are dozens of houseplants that naturally filter the air, remove chemicals, and (perhaps best of all) add a splash of color and life to any room.

Consider the aesthetics of the plant and how it will fit in your room before purchasing, of course, but the plant known to be the strongest purifier and cited by NASA to be just that is the Areca Palm.

What is the Areca Palm?

Also known as Dypsis lutescens, bamboo palm, golden cane palm, yellow palm, or butterfly palm, the plant grows naturally in Madagascar. While it can reach heights of nearly 40ft outdoors, in your home or apartment, it won’t grow taller than 6 or 7 feet.

The Areca Palm and Your Indoor Air

  • Irritants Removed: This tropical plant is known to absorb and remove formaldehyde, xylene, toluene, benzene,  and carbon monoxide.
  • Humidifier: An areca palm at full indoor height will release approximately 1 liter of water per day into your air. Through this, the palm functions as a natural humidifier.
  • Caring for Your Areca Palm: The areca palm grows best in bright filtered light. Place it in a Southern or Eastern exposure and provide ample water when in growth. During the winter reduce watering.

Air Quality Solutions from Four Seasons

The areca palm, though a powerful fertilizer, is not a complete air quality solution for your home. For that, you will need either an air purifier or the APCO UV-C Germicidal light. Think of your indoor plants as supplements for your other air quality devices.
